How ONE OK ROCK’s “Stand Out Fit In” Still Resonates Today

When first discovering Japanese rock music, one of the bands that kept coming up was ONE OK ROCK. As their top songs get millions of listens and views, they regularly reach the top of many streaming playlists. The song, Stand Out Fit In, from 2018, especially made an impression, delivering a powerful message about social conformity in a world of contradictions.

Notably, this song has a universal message about the challenges many people worldwide face. Social pressure, parental expectations, and personal rebellion create an ongoing conflict between standing out and fitting in. For example, parents give advice on how to behave in our communities. But when we are young, we want to break free of their rules. Yet the central question remains: how far do you go to be unique, versus how much do you restrain yourself to conform?

Standout Out Visually

Let’s look at how Stand Out Fit In brings this universal struggle to life through a compelling story in its music video. A young Asian boy in an American city faces alienation. While his parents operate a Chinese restaurant, he travels alone from there to school. At school, he “stands out” in an unpopular way; he is bullied for looking different and made fun of for the ethnic food he eats.

As the story advances, a time jump shows us the same boy as a teenager. Now, what’s changed is that he can “fit in” by having made friends and swapped Chinese lunches for PB&J sandwiches. The teenager, who has assimilated into this culture, is having fun with a diverse group. Tragically, things go wrong on a late-night drive as his new friends are drinking while driving. They get into a horrible car wreck!

At this point, the music stops, and we focus on a dazed young man, stumbling onto the sidewalk. In what may be a dream, his eyes are drawn to a mysterious figure in a parking lot. The apparition is clad in red garb adorned with Asian patterns. As the music fades in, the masked man begins to dance in a rhythmic pattern. The injured man finds his strength, approaches this reflection of his heritage, and begins dancing in the same pattern. Surprisingly, his friends return, and they begin dancing in the parking lot with him, West Side Story style.

Is this dancing apparition of reflection of your inner self?

The choreographed dance continues for a few beats as the young man alternates between dancing with the group and moving away on his own. Then, seemingly exhausted, he falls away from the group. They rush to carry him away, then move him towards a building. Suddenly, they disappear, and we see the young Asian boy again, standing in front of his parents’ Chinese restaurant.

Fit In With The Crowd

The video’s story depicts real-world tensions for immigrants and anyone dealing with cultural expectations. Many must reconcile fitting in while remaining faithful to their identity. These themes are additionally reinforced by the song’s lyrics, which illustrate the persistent conflict between authentic self-expression and social assimilation. Lines, like below, are remarkable for the resolving declaration that strikes a chord with so many of us.

I just wanna be myself
I can’t be someone else, someone else
They yell, they preach
I’ve heard it all before
Be this, be that
I’ve heard it before
Heard it before

I am who I am, no matter what
Never changing, no matter what
No matter what

This second track from the Eye of the Storm album, Stand Out Fit In, has garnered over 167 million streams on streaming services, and the video has achieved 68 million views on YouTube. Clearly, this song resonates with many people and inspires them. As many of the band’s songs, of pop and rock variety, have themes on people and relationships, this one feels very inspirational. It’s in line with other noteworthy tunes like their ballad Be The Light.

Ultimately, ONE OK ROCK’s Stand Out Fit In powerfully encourages listeners to reconcile individuality with acceptance. It highlights that growth comes from navigating this delicate balance, which is a message that continues to resonate. Hopefully, you find as much inspiration in this song as I do. Although I am not Asian and have not experienced life as a foreigner, I can still relate to feeling out of place at times in my own community. These occasions taught me to “dance like no one is watching,” as put forward in these lyrics from the 1987 song Come from the Heart.

You’ve got to sing like you don’t need the money
Love like you’ll never get hurt
You’ve got to dance like nobody’s watchin’
It’s gotta come from the heart if you want it to work.

Let’s hope that over time, we all learn how to stand out and fit in.
